Expand/Contract, composed for solo bassoon (September, 2016) explores a dichotomy of musical characteristics of time being expanded and contracted. These include manifestations of timbral effect and rhythmic motion. To achieve this, special effects were employed, such as specified vibrato speed, air noise, flutter-tongue, and multiphonics for a relatively abrasive quality, as well as non-pitched key clicks. This is further developed through an interplay of pointillistic and melismatic passages. This piece is a result of my ongoing curiosity of exploiting human perception of time and sound. Expand/Contract was premiered in 2016 by Brendon Sill at the University of South Florida.
